As part of ESA's Distributed Space Weather Sensor System (D3S), it is foreseen to make use of small satellites in the mass range ofaround 100 kg. A Phase A/B1 study is been initiated for the D3S SmallSat mission where it is considered to implement a constellation of six satellites after a demonstration using a precursor single satellite mission. The constellation would allow to perform a range of in-situ measurements at different altitudes while performing close-to-continuous Auroral Imaging. The development of a miniaturised auroral imager (UV and Optical) is about to start. This activity shall now address all necessary tasks, in the frame of the running Phase A/B studies, to define the instruments needed for space weather monitoring as part of the SmallSat mission. Currently the following instruments are considered: Magnetometer, Radiation Monitor, Langmuir Probe, Plasma Analyser, Micro Particle Detector, Medium Energy Particle Spectrometer, Oxygen Sensor, and optionally an Accelerometer.
