Dr Francisco Javier Mendieta-Jiménez, Director General of the Mexican Space Agency (AEM), was hosted by POLSA between 3rd-7th February 2018 in Poland. The goal of the visit was to determine the cooperation plan for 2018 between both agencies, regarding i.a. organizing joint scientific workshops and seminars devoted to Earth observation.
During the meeting at the Polish Space Agency, the AEM Director General familiarized himself with the current status of POLSA’s works. He was also acquainted with the main assumptions of the National Space Programme project, drafted by POLSA in 2017, with particular focus on supporting space technology development in Poland, implemented i.a. within international cooperation and multi- and bilateral projects conducted also with the United Mexican States. Bilateral talks with the participation of Col. Piotr Suszynski, POLSA Vice President for Defence and Prof. Marek Moszyński, PhD Eng., Vice President for Science concerned elaborating on Polish-Mexican scientific and technological seminars and workshops, which are planned for this year.
One of the scheduled points of the stay in Warsaw was a visit to the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN). Dr Jimenez met with Prof. Iwona Stanisławska, PhD, the Director of CBK PAN and the top management of the institution. Afterwards, he took a tour of the institute, becoming acquainted with its rich heritage.
On February 6th, 2018, the AEM Director General, joined by POLSA representatives, guested at the Warsaw University of Technology, where he was hosted by Prof. Jerzy Banaszek, PhD Eng., Plenipotentiary of the Rector for Satellite and Space Technologies, and Prof. Janusz Frączek, PhD Eng., the Dean of the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering. The held talks concerned establishing scientific ties between the Warsaw University of Technology and Mexican technical institutions of higher education and supporting such cooperation within activities resulting from the Memorandum of Understanding between the Polish Space Agency of the Republic of Poland and the Mexican Space Agency of the United Mexican States Concerning Technical anScientific Cooperation in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes. AEM Director General and POLSA representatives had also a discussion with Prof. Jan Szmidt, PhD Eng., the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology. Nextly, Dr Jimenez met with students from the WUT science association involved in the implementation of the student’s satellite PW-Sat2 project, whose launch is preliminary planned for the end of 2018.
The Mexican Space Agency is a government agency responsible for supervising the Mexican space programme, as well as indicating goals and strategies of developing the domestic space industry. POLSA signed a memorandum of understanding with AEM on April 24th, 2017. The Polish-Mexican cooperation in the field of space concerns satellite data management (including i.a. ground infrastructure development and utilization of satellite imagery by public administration) and information exchange regarding communications and Earth observation technologies. The three areas of joint undertakings are planned to cover small satellite construction and development, atmosphere pollution monitoring and scientific projects related to i.a. space weather research.
