Col. Marcin Górka appointed Acting Vice President of Defence

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has entrusted Colonel Marcin Górka with the duties of Vice President of Defence of the Polish Space Agency, beginning December 18, 2018, for a period of 3 months, until a formal appointment of the Vice President of Defence. On March 18th 2019, he extended this period by another three months.

Col. Marcin Górka is a graduate of the Faculty of Engineering, Chemistry and Technical Physics of the Military University of Technology in the field of Military Geodesy, specializing in satellite navigation. He is also a graduate of the NATO Defense College.

During his service at the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, he was responsible for establishing the Polish military capabilities in the field of satellite imaging, and subsequently was among the leaders in the creation of the concept of using satellite techniques and space technologies to support intelligence for the Polish Armed Forces.

As an expert in the field of satellite imaging at the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) in Norfolk, he was responsible for creating strategies and doctrines regarding the use of satellite technologies for reconnaissance by the North Atlantic Alliance.

He coordinated the development and implementation of operational programs for imagery intelligence utilization in the Polish Army, and was the leading negotiator of Poland's accession to the MUSIS (Multinational Space-Based Imaging System) multinational space program, implemented under the auspices of the European Defence Agency.

Col. Gorka was the first commander of the Polish Imagery Intelligence Centre - the first-ever Polish military unit with operational capabilities in the field of satellite reconnaissance and ground-support operations for military customers. As a representative of the Ministry of National Defence, he participated in the development of the national space policy.

During his service, Col. Gorka consistently represented the Polish Armed Forces in international projects and undertakings, including those within NATO Standardization Groups, cooperation with the European Union Satellite Center, cooperation in the field of satellite Earth observation with Italy, France, Israel, and the USA. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Imagery Management Group on behalf of the Alliance, and later served as the national representative for this group. He gained international operational experience as a liaison officer for Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom at USCENTCOM.

Col. Gorka’s vast experience and knowledge, as well as his many years of vigour and ambitions for the advancement of Poland’s space sector will yield great success for POLSA - stated the President of the Agency, Grzegorz Brona, PhD Dsc.

Colonel Marcin Górka as the Acting Vice President will oversee the work of the Department of Defence Projects and the Department of Military Satellite Technologies. Until the appointment of Col. Górka, the duties of the Vice President of Defence were carried out by the President of the Polish Agency, Grzegorz Brona, who was appointed by the Prime Minister in May 2018.
