About the subject
Scanway is a Polish technology company that designs and implements optical solutions for two industries: space (high-resolution telescopes and observation instruments) and manufacturing (machine vision systems). Scanway products make it possible to observe any object and area in a precise, continuous manner and with an accuracy greater than the human eye. The company consists of two teams – Scanway Space, which specializes in creating observation systems for micro- and nanosatellites, and Scanway Industry, which develops industrial quality control systems. The company’s most important projects are:
- optical telescopes for Earth Observation
- camera systems for space applications,
- variety of highly effective industrial implementations
The company has more than 8 years of experience in the space industry and TRL 9 for its solutions. Since 2023, Scanway is a public company with 60+ employees on board.
Main products and services
- SOP – Scanway’s Optical Payload. As part of SOP, Scanway is developing a product series of Earth observation telescopes primarily for small satellites. The company’s past projects and activities have resulted in telescopes dedicated to work with 3U, 6U platforms and microsatellites. The apertures of the optical elements used are up to 450 mm, allowing resolution of less than a metre from standard orbits (e.g. in low Earth orbit). The telescopes of the SOP line, thanks to the use of modern materials and an innovative approach to design, have athermal properties to maintain high imaging quality parameters during on-orbit operation.
- SCS – Spacecraft Camera System. SCS is Scanway’s proprietary product developed in response to the increasing number of satellites and rockets being sent into orbit. This is the simple family of vision systems that are camera-based and are integrated into the structure of the spacecraft. This allows the spacecraft to carry out self-diagnostics based on the images acquired. The cameras collect data from both outside and inside the spacecraft, and their range of applications includes, for example, assessment of the degradation of solar arrays, verification of the operation of mechanisms, verification of the operation of AOCS systems or thermographic analysis of electronic components. Analysis of the images acquired from the cameras is carried out in specially designed electronics using FPGA and artificial intelligence algorithms. In the future, SCS will be used for various other on-orbit operations, like in-orbit servicing.
The most important achievements in the space sector
- Project PIAST – a consortium project to launch a constellation of 3 Earth observation nanosatellites for a military client. Scanway’s role in the project is to provide 2 telescopes. The project is co-financed by NCBiR under the Sapphire program.
- EagleEye project – a consortium project to launch a microsatellite capable of observing the Earth with a resolution of 1 m from an orbit of 300-350 km (VLEO). Scanway’s role in the project was to provide the entire imaging device. The project is co-financed by NCBiR.
- STAR VIBE – a demonstration mission by Scanway and German Orbital Systems to rapidly acquire so-called flight heritage optical instruments. The project consists of two experiments, i.e. SOP (telescope for Earth observation at 25m per pixel resolution, in a 6U-class nanosatellite) and SHS (vision system for satellite status observation). From January 2023 in orbit.
- ScanSAT – a project to develop a satellite and aerial observation platform for real-time geo-information acquisition with high precision and over a very wide electromagnetic band. The project was co-financed by the NCBiR.
- LUWEX – Development of technology for extracting water from the lunar regolith. Scanway working in a consortium with, among others, the German Space Agency and Thales Alenia, we are developing a spectrometer to analyze the purity of water extracted from lunar soil in the future.
- DREAM (DRilling Experiment for Asteroid Mining)
- TRACZ (Testing Robotic Application For Catching in Zero-G)
- Vision system for payload monitoring – Suborbital Express.
- OTTER misson – SOP-1U/65 is a small telescope, which purpose is to Earth observations in RGB bands.
- Hellenic Space Dawn mission – Scanway providing SOP-1U/65, a small telescope.
- Ariane 6 – Scanway provided a dual system camera that will fly on the Ariane 6 maiden fly. The goal of system is to observe separation of fairing and deployment of YPSat ESA satellite.
