Objectives are to manufacture a low-cost mirror cell of 70 cm minimum with an upper design goal of 100 cm out of aluminium (mirror segment with its support actuator structure) and validate its suitability for use in an optical antenna. As the main building block of an optical antenna for optical space to ground links, the primary mirror characteristics is driving the complexity, the cost, the production time and maintainability of the entire system. While several alternatives have been sought (including CFRP) without success, a mirror cell using Aluminium is today a very promising candidate for significant cost reduction of the overall antenna. This activity aims at the assessing the feasibility of this very attractive and promising while risky, alternative material. C1: Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
