This activity will analyse the options for an upgrade of the camera system used for space debris observations at ESA’s Optical Ground Station (OGS). New technologies, such as Active Pixel Sensors (APS) based on CMOS technology, will be considered. As these new options allow for significant improvements of the sensor design, e.g., operation without shutter and novel data processing strategies,the OGS is an excellent test-bed for defining innovative sensor components. These camera designs will be made available for national sensor developments and upgrades for space debris monitoring and, potentially, also to observe NEOs. The activity will also include a benchmarking campaign that will support the definition of the new camera design. Already available prototype scientific CMOS cameras may be tested under loan and test agreements with their manufacturers.
